I first met Magdy and the team at Helping Hands – Healing Heroes at a food distribution they were facilitating at a veterans shelter I work with that assists the homeless. Magdy and the entire team were compassionate, thoughtful and truly cared about each and every veteran they interacted with. The food boxes they were distributing were packed with sundries and other non-perishable items that were desperately needed by those receiving them. Each box had enough food for several days; for some of these veterans, that is the only food they had to sustain them!
I was a mess! Homeless, angry, and on drugs. I burned all the bridges I had; made some really stupid and crazy choices in my life that led me to the situation I found myself in when I met Mr. Zakhary at a gas station. He bought me some food and just talked to me like a normal human being. I ended up staying at a veterans transitional housing facility operated by Helping Hands, free of charge, for several months. It was the help I needed exactly when I needed it. It saved my life!
